| UNIQUE/SPECIAL PROGRAMS |
 |
Rhodes College and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital joined together in 2001 to create a formal research program for Rhodes students. Each summer six Rhodes students will participate in the Summer Plus program at St. Jude. The students will spend 12 weeks in laboratories where they will train and be mentored by St. Jude researchers in areas such as infectious diseases, molecular biology and pharmacology, genetics, neurobiology and radiation oncology. Participants will then continue their research during the next academic year working at St. Jude and earning academic credit toward their majors. In addition to the Summer Plus program, the collaboration between St. Jude and Rhodes includes a new interdisciplinary seminar series at the college. Guest lecturers from St. Jude deliver weekly presentations on their current research to senior students in the departments of biology, psychology, chemistry and physics. Also, Rhodes College has joined a select group of 50 colleges and universities participating in the Thomas J. Watson Foundation Fellowship Program. The invitation to join the program means that Rhodes will have the opportunity to nominate four seniors graduating in 2002 for consideration for the prestigious fellowships. Watson Fellowships enable new graduates to spend a year abroad in independent travel and study, pursuing projects of their own design. About 60 of the $22,000 fellowships are awarded annually. The Watson Fellowship Program provides Fellows a journey of discovery in which they are able to explore thoroughly a particular interest. To apply for the fellowships, students submit proposals detailing projects they would undertake during their year abroad. Those selected for the fellowships have the freedom to plan their entire itinerary for the year. |
